The business community of Union Lake is situated essentially along the Union Lake and Cooley Lake roads traffic corridors of four townships: Commerce, West Bloomfield, Waterford and White Lake. They all abut at Cooley Lake and Williams Lake roads.
Never a government unit, Union Lake has always been the name of a postal facility that took on a life of its own. Mail delivery to portions of Commerce, Waterford, White Lake and West Bloomfield townships were serviced by Union Lake.
In 1963, when Congress decreed zip codes could not cross governmental boundaries, Union Lake, 48387, became the zip code for post office box customers.
In the 1980's, a Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce initiative brought together businesses and planners from the four townships who defined a Union Lake business district with common zoning and sign ordinances.
